A little corner of Japan on 17th Street.
A cozy, family-run market stocked floor to ceiling with Japanese staples — fresh onigiri, imported snacks, produce, and pantry essentials you won't find at the big grocery stores.
Small space. Big heart.
Hana Market has been a neighborhood fixture for years, run by a family that treats every visitor like they've just walked into their own kitchen. It's tiny — a couple of tight aisles — but they manage to pack in an outstanding range of authentic Japanese groceries, snacks, and drinks.
Visitors consistently point to the reasonable prices, the cozy and authentic feel of the shop, and a staff that's friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help you find what you need.
Everything for your Japanese pantry.
A tightly-packed little market with a surprisingly complete lineup.

Get there for the onigiri — they sell out.

A handful of the notes shoppers have left after stopping by.
Hana is a gem in a very Asian-grocery-barren DC. The produce is consistently excellent — I can grab veggies without needing to examine them.
Found this cute little market that makes fresh onigiri in the morning. The owner was extremely hospitable and welcoming.
A tight, small place but packed to the brim with great ramen, fresh produce, and condiments. I always stop by for the onigiri at 1pm.
Immigrant-owned, run by a wife-husband team — homemade rice balls every day, with noodles, mochi, and curries filling every shelf.
Prices are pretty affordable, even less expensive than the bigger chains despite the location. Now they carry fresh sashimi too!
Small but mighty corner shop — a godsend for carless folks who can't easily get out to the suburbs for Asian groceries.
See you on 17th Street.
Open every day, 11 AM to 8 PM. The onigiri go fast, so don't wait too long in the day.
